Workout clothes: Natural fabrics anti-bacterial properties, not anti-viral

Posted by Nicolas Mekchoudi on

In the Covid-19 context we are now all living in, we have been asked recently if Tencel Lyocell, or any other natural fabric such bamboo, have any anti-viral properties?

Meaning, do virus survive less time on Tencel than they would do on any other synthetic textiles. I am gonna say, absolutely no proofs whatsoever that it is the case and do not believe anything that you may read otherwise.

The best defense is wash your hands often, avoid large social gathering and in terms of clothes, wash them probably more often than you would normally do as laundry detergent have been shown to kill coronavirus.

What we can say about Tencel Lyocell in general, and nothing to do with Coronaviruses is that:

Tencel clothing require less washing because of natural anti-bacterial properties in normal circumstances, the surface of the material is more unfavorable for bacterial growth and odor: Lyocell fibers absorb moisture efficiently. In comparison to synthetics (Polyester, nylon) there is less available moisture formed on the surface of the fiber for bacteria to grow offering better hygienic qualities to fabrics: Less odour, sweat stains, therefore longer freshness and less washing.
