What is lyocell? What is Tencel?

Posted by Nicolas Mekchoudi on

When I started researching sustainable fabrics to make eco-friendly active wear, I came across many natural fibers already used in different ecological textiles, more or less known, such as bamboo, linen, hemp, viscose, modal, all plant-based fibers, organic cotton of course or animal-based such as silk or Merino wool. I had heard of Tencel but never of Lyocell...

Lyocell fabric is an amazing ecological fabric and for some represents the future of environmentally friendly sustainable clothing. Lyocell is a natural, man-made fibre, made with wood pulp from sustainable tree farms and make use of nanotechnology in a closed-loop process that recovers 99% of all solvents. The process greatly reduces CO2 emissions, water usage, and like most natural renewable fibers, lyocell is compostable and biodegradable in soil and marine conditions. Being a non-synthetic, non-petroleum based fiber unlike nylon or polyester, no micro-plastics are rejected. More about the environmental benefits of lyocell

What is Tencel™ Lyocell then?

Tencel™ is a branded type of lyocell fibers by Austrian company Lenzing, made of Eucalyptus wood pulp exclusively in sustainably managed, controlled and certified forests. Other lyocell fibers may come from a variety of tree sources and not follow the same strict low environmental impact guidelines and processes Lenzing follows. Modal, Micro-Modal, Viscose are also man-made non-synthetic fibers from wood pulp but come from difference transformation processes.

Lenzing is a the fore-front of renewable textile innovation and is set to become the first carbon-neutral textile fiber producer in the world

Lyocell or Tencel lyocell material is very versatile and is used to make clothing, from underwear to activewear, denim, footwear, bed sheets, towels, home ware and more.

Benefits of Tencel clothing for comfort and performance

  • Thermal regulation & Breath-ability: Tencel lycoell material is breathable, the natural wood fibers let air in and sweat out to keep cool in the summer heat and warmer in the winter cold. (How trees survive in all climate..they regulate themselves.)
  • Skin friendly, hypo-allergenic and extra organic comfort for sensitive skin - Certified Oeko-Tex Standard 100, no harmful chemical substances
  • Fresher longer and hygienic, helps with odor management, the smooth surface of lyocell is unfavorable for bacterial growth. It means less sweat stains, less odor so less washing.
